Perrin was director of the Opéra-Comique from 1848-1857 and briefly in 1862 when he discovered the mezzo-soprano galli-marié. In 1854-1855 he also led the Théâtre Lyrique, where he raised its artistic level, but subsequently resigned. In December 1862, he became director of the Opéra de Paris, where he employed Georges Bizet, but did not support his work. He was removed from office in 1870 on charges of insufficient patriotism.
In 1875 he was commissioned to arbitrate a dispute over the opera Carmen at the Opéra-Comique, despite not liking it himself. From 1871 until his death, he held the position of administrator of the Comédie-Française and in 1876 was elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. He died on October 8, 1885.
