[LVIV— a section of St. Mary's Square—a panoramic, situational photograph]. [1916/2nd half of the 20th century]. Photographic print, 11.6x16.3 cm, from a photograph taken by Marek Münz in Lviv.
A view of a section of the square known as St. Mary’s Square since 1871 (formerly Ferdinand Square), now known as Mickiewicz Square. In the center stands the monument to Adam Mickiewicz, surrounded by a large crowd of demonstrators. The ground floors of the tenement houses feature numerous fashionable shops, and directly across is a view of Marian Lasocki’s well-known restaurant. In good condition.
Currently known as Mickiewicz Square— formerly Ferdinand Square, though it had been called St. Mary’s Square since 1862, when a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary was erected in its center. The official name “Mariacki Square” was granted in 1871 by a city council resolution as part of the reorganization of the urban space. Hotels, shops, cafés, bookstores, and editorial offices are concentrated around the square. Currently, the central point of the square is occupied by the monument to Adam Mickiewicz, considered the most beautiful in Lviv, which was unveiled in October 1904.
M. Münz (Max), also known as Markus Mordche (1878–1937)—“from 1925 to 1928, he ran a photography studio together with Samuel Nick at 32 Batorego Street (Kniazia Roman); from 1904 to 1908, the “Elwira” studio on Kopernika Street. In 1910, Münz opened his own studio at 15 Jagiellońska Street (Hnatiuka), which he ran until the end of his life (in 1937, the studio was taken over by his widow, Aurelia). At the same time, Münz participated in other businesses or established new ones. For example, from 1912 to 1914, the “Marek Münz and Company” Artistic and Zincography Workshop operated at 12 Batorego Street; from 1921 to 1924, Münz managed the photography studio of the late S. Klaften at 11 Jagiellońska Street; in 1927, in partnership with his former colleague S. Nick, he ran the “Mimoza” studio at 35 Karola Ludwika Street. That same year, he opened another photography studio of his own, “Diana,” in the shopping center at 34 Leona Sapiehy Street (S. Bandery). M. Münz was the author of numerous photographs depicting views of Lviv, and he frequently published his work in Lviv magazines.” (biographical note from: I.
