Rare jubilee badge issued to commemorate the 700th anniversary of the foundation of the Secular Franciscan Order (formerly the Third Order of St Francis). Celebrated in 1921, the anniversary marked the establishment of the community founded by St Francis of Assisi in 1221 for lay men and women wishing to live according to Franciscan ideals while remaining in their families and secular occupations. To mark the jubilee, Pope Benedict XV issued the encyclical Sacra propediem on 6 January 1921, emphasizing the importance of the Third Order in the renewal of Christian religious and social life.
