The reign of Sigismund I the Old was a period of monetary reforms. One of these was the creation of a single currency for the Crown and Prussia, for which a mint was opened in Toruń. In response, Elbląg, among others, began efforts to establish its own mint, citing, among other things, a privilege granted during the reign of Kazimierz. It received the king’s consent in 1530 and issued its first coins that same year.
The earliest known Elbląg trojak (the 1535 issue is known from a piece in the National Museum in Warsaw).
A variant with the legend ending in “ELBIN” and a rosette above the city’s coat of arms.
Rarer.
Cleaned, with a nick at the bottom of the reverse, but with good legibility and minting quality.
