Salvador Dalí was one of the most outstanding and important figures of Surrealism and 20th-century art. He was a painter, sculptor, printmaker, illustrator, and art theorist. He was associated with the most prominent artists of his time. In his private life, he led an extravagant existence, espoused extreme theories, and was utterly self-absorbed, throwing parties in his own honor and opening his own museum. But as an artist, he was the father of fantastical Surrealism bordering on illusionism; after the war, religious themes began to dominate his work.
